Classic cars photographed with film, it just seems right. Old cars, old cameras, old ways of bringing things to life. It’s something I really enjoy doing. Sometimes I find old cars on the side of the road, sometimes I go to car shows to find these classics. I pretty much know what cameras and film stocks to bring but once in awhile I like to mix it up.
I recently attended a local Cars & Coffee event here in town. I knew it would be a larger than normal turnout because it was the day before the 4th of July. I recently found out (I know, I feel foolish lol) that my Rolleicord can do double exposures. Cool right? I think so! Before even heading to the car show, I ran a roll through the Rolleicord a few days before and did some double exposure portraits with my twins. Green light, ready to go.
I chose Delta 100. It is a lovely film and it looks great in square format. I am no expert in double exposures and how to create them in camera, so I shot the photos normally and developed normally. I figured that B&W film has a pretty good exposure latitude so I should be able to get close, and I did. The focus was composition. Sure, I could have written down each shot before composing for the second, but I chose not to. I didn’t feel like hassling with it, so I just went off of memory. It worked out for some, it didn’t work out for others.
Attached below are some of the double exposures created in my Rolleicord. Some I love, some I don’t but I want to share them anyways. It goes to show how hard it is to get any keepers from each roll and I’ll be able to look back to see my progress as I keep attempting to create some good ones consistently. Enjoy!
